Abstract

Precipitation is one of the most important parameters of the water cycle, the estimation of which can be very effective in the management of water and soil resources. In this study, SM2RAIN-NWF algorithm was used to estimate irrigation water consumption at the basin scale based on satellite soil moisture data. Satellite soil moisture observations obtained from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR2) along with GLEAM products and rainfall in the period 2012-2020 were used as input to the model. In this research, precipitation estimation was done for three different sites including agricultural land Miandoab, vegetated surface Malekan and barren land Bonab. The correlation coefficient R2 for rainfall estimation by this model was obtained between 0.53 and 0.70. The comparison of the results for the mentioned sites showed that the model shows much better results in the areas without vegetation. The results of irrigation estimation in Miandoab plain also showed that although the model systematically estimates irrigation less and more in some seasons compared to the in-situ data, However, the average performance of the model in irrigated pixels in terms of (NS= 0.55 ), (R2= 0.63) and (PRMSE= 2.48%) showed the proposed approach can depict the suitable irrigation pattern.
